Brian Needham

Dentist.

Specialist Paramedic Urgent Care.

After leaving school in 1980 joined the Royal Green Jackets, initially as a foot soldier before going on to join the band and bugles as a musician. In 1991 he was called upon to serve alongside H.M Scots Guards as medic for a 250-man strong infantry battle group during the first gulf war.

Brian joined the Royal Berkshire Ambulance NHS Trust in 1994 as a trainee Paramedic achieving qualification in this role in 1996 and then as a work-based assessor/instructor in 1997. The year 2000 saw Brian and his family move to Cornwall into the employment of South Western Ambulance Services NHS Trust. He then went on to qualify in 2008 as a Specialist Paramedic, having achieved a 1st Class Honours Degree in Emergency Care from the University of Plymouth. This enabled Brian to gain access to the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in 2010, on a four-year bachelor of dental sciences program where (at age 46) he was one of the more mature students! Following graduation he has worked in general dental practice but remains a qualified Specialist Paramedic working occasional bank shifts for the ambulance service.

Brian being a qualified dentist and Specialist Paramedic has an enthusiasm for Pre-hospital care and passion for training Dental staff in Emergency First Aid. Brian’s skills were recently put to good use when a customer collapsed and had a cardiac arrest in the Dental Practice. The patient was successfully resuscitated thanks to effective basic life support and the use of a defibrillator - something Brian is keen to cascade to all dental staff with our bespoke training course.
